How to Convert a Unix Timestamp to a Date (and Back)

A number like 1735689600 in a log or database means nothing to the human eye until it's converted into a date. Here's how to convert it both ways, plus why the number sometimes looks "too long."

A Unix timestamp is how computer systems store time: the number of seconds (or milliseconds) that have elapsed since January 1, 1970. Practical for computers, but not directly readable by humans. This tool converts it both ways — from timestamp to date, and from date to timestamp.

Steps to convert

  1. Open tools.meaecosystem.com/timestamp-converter.
  2. To turn a timestamp into a date: type the Unix timestamp number into the available field — the resulting date appears instantly.
  3. For the reverse direction: choose the date and time you want, and the timestamp is calculated automatically.

Why does my timestamp number look a different length?

It's a matter of units. A timestamp in seconds is usually 10 digits (e.g. 1735689600), while a timestamp in milliseconds is 13 digits (1735689600000) — the exact same value, just multiplied by 1000. If your conversion result looks strange (say, the year ends up thousands of years in the future), you've likely picked the wrong unit. This tool supports both, so just double-check the unit setting.

What are timestamps usually used for?

Most commonly used in server logs, databases, and APIs — because numbers are far easier to compare and sort than string date formats. If you're debugging data from a log or an API response, converting it to an ordinary date is usually the first step that makes the data make sense.

Frequently asked questions

Is the data I enter sent to a server?

No. The conversion is done directly in your browser using JavaScript's built-in date functions.

What time zone is used?

The conversion result follows your device's time zone by default.

What's the Unix Epoch?

The Unix Epoch is the zero point of a Unix timestamp: January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 UTC. Every Unix timestamp is calculated as a distance from this point.
